Valheim Armor Progression Guide — Every Set From Rag to Deep North Heavy

Valheim armor explained tier by tier: troll hide, bronze, iron, wolf, padded, carapace, flametal and the 1.0 Deep North sets, with movement penalties, resistances and upgrade priorities.
Armor in Valheim is a ladder of sets, each biome minting its own protection tier with a personality: stealth sets with no movement penalty, heavy plates that eat hits, and resistance pieces that turn biome hazards into suggestions. This guide walks the full ladder, Meadows to Deep North.

The set ladder
- Rag & leather — Meadows basics; deer hide cape first, always.
- Troll hide — crafted from hide dropped by trolls; zero movement penalty and a sneak bonus — the assassin's set and a speedrunner favorite.
- Bronze — the first metal plate; safe, slow, and the Black Forest's standard issue.
- Iron — Swamp-era heavy; the crypt-crawler's shell.
- Wolf — Mountain-era; frost resistance built in, which is the entire point — the Mountains without wolf pieces or constant mead are a stamina tax you pay per step.
- Padded — Plains-era iron-and-linen plate; the last classic heavy line.
- Carapace — Mistlands carapace armor, the insect-chitin plateau before the endgame splits.
- Flametal — the Ashlands' fiery endgame metal line.
- Deep North sets — 1.0 adds four new armor sets, forged at the Frost Foundry from northern materials; Jotun warriors drop the medium and heavy armour moulds the smithies eat, and the sets carry vikings through the game's final fights.
Capes: the quiet power pieces
Capes carry resistances: the wolf fur cape (frost), lox cape (the Plains' heavyweight), the Ashlands' fire-line capes, and 1.0's two new capes for the north. Swap capes per biome like tools; a resistance cape often beats an armor upgrade outright.
Upgrade priorities
- Chest first — the biggest armor-value piece, always.
- Cape early — resistance value per material is absurd.
- Upgrade one set fully rather than three sets halfway — armor works in thresholds, not fractions.
- Craft the next tier before you need it — walking into a new biome in the previous biome's max is the intended difficulty; walking in under-leveled is a tombstone run.
Heavy vs light: the honest trade
Heavy sets maximize the armor threshold that flattens mob damage; light sets (troll, Fenris) buy speed and stealth. The meta answer is both: heavy for boss arenas and crypt corridors, light for travel, farming and playstyles that never intend to be hit. Mage builds live in the light line; tanks live in the heavy line; everyone else owns one of each.
