Valheim left early access on September 9, 2026 after five and a half years: the Deep North biome, Kall Fimbulbringer, launch-trailer reaction and the genre's congratulations.

The viking longship has docked: Valheim 1.0 went live on September 9, 2026, closing a five-and-a-half-year early access run that began as a five-man studio's February 2021 surprise and became one of the best-selling survival games ever made.

What launched

The full release ships the Deep North biome, eighth boss Kall Fimbulbringer, the Jotun invasion storyline, 40+ new weapons, four new armor sets, the grappling hook, frozen-sea traversal, inventory expansions, achievements and a rebuilt save system on an upgraded engine. Our complete breakdown lives in the 1.0 & Deep North update guide, and the fight waiting in the snow is covered in the Kall Fimbulbringer guide.

The launch trailer capped the reveal: a fittingly moody tour of the frozen north, scored like a saga's last page.

The genre salutes

The release drew warm notices from across the survival genre. Palworld's developers publicly congratulated Iron Gate, calling Valheim "a source of inspiration for everyone in the genre" following the 1.0 launch — a nod from 2024's biggest survival breakout to the game that reshaped the category's expectations in 2021.

The numbers keep rolling

Steam's own sales charts underlined the moment: Valheim sat among the platform's global top sellers for the week of September 8–15, 2026 — launch week — as returning vikings and first-timers piled in together. Five and a half years of goodwill, one very convenient week of vacation time.

What comes after

Post-launch support began immediately: hotfixes 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 landed September 11, patch 1.0.14 on September 17 and patch 1.0.15 on September 18 — the full roundup is in our post-launch patch notes. Iron Gate has called the Deep North the game's concluding chapter; whatever sails after that, the saga's road now belongs to the players.
