Bonemass Guide — Valheim's Swamp Boss: Poison, Blunt Damage and the Wishbone

How to summon and beat Bonemass in Valheim: farming withered bones, why the iron mace is mandatory, poison resistance mead timing, ooze adds, and the wishbone reward.

Bonemass is the Swamp's mountain of rot and Valheim's third boss — the fight that teaches blunt damage and poison resistance, and the wall that separates progressing vikings from tombstone tourists. Come prepared, and it is one of the most satisfying beats in the game.

Summoning: withered bones

Bonemass's altar sits on a mound deep in the Swamp, marked by a vegvisir runestone in crypts and swamp ruins. The summon costs ten Withered Bones, looted from sunken crypts — the same iron-bearing dungeons the Swamp Key opens. Expect one to two crypt clears to bank all ten; grab the crypts' iron on the way out, because you will need the mace.

Pre-fight prep — the non-negotiables

  • An iron mace (upgraded if possible). Bonemass is strongly resistant to slash and pierce and weak to blunt — swords and bows barely tick him, maces crumble him.
  • Poison resistance mead, one per attempt minimum, drunk just before summoning. His aura and attacks poison constantly; without the mead the fight is unwinnable for most builds.
  • Food and heal: the best swamp-era food (sausages, turnip stew, queens' jam), minor healing mead, and stamina brews.
  • Arena: raise earthen walls with the hoe to funnel adds, and keep the altar area clear. A fallback trench behind the arena saves runs.

The fight

  1. Melee swipe: a huge arm sweep with a long wind-up. Roll through it — the hitbox is enormous, so distance dodging fails more than the roll.
  2. Poison vomit: a close-range cone of gas. Back out of the arc and let the mead carry the residual ticks.
  3. Blob throw: he flings ooze blobs that splash poison at range. Strafe; do not clump with teammates.
  4. Adds: he periodically summons ooze blobs and draugr from the mire. Mace them instantly — the oozes explode on death, so finish them at arm's length.

The solo strategy: mace his legs between his attacks, roll through every swipe, and treat adds as the real fight — most deaths come from an unnoticed ooze flanking the kiting lane. Groups assign one mace to adds and everyone else to the boss. He is slow and his attacks telegraph hard; patience beats greed on every swing.

Rewards: the wishbone

Bonemass drops the Wishbone (plus his trophy). Equip it and it pulses whenever buried treasure or — critically — silver veins are beneath you. Silver is the Mountain biome's entire progression tier; without the wishbone you are guessing at snowdrifts. The wishbone makes Mountain mining mechanical instead of mystical.

His power, blunt resistance, is a solid tank buff for swamp cleanup and beast-heavy runs, though Yagluth's elemental resistance eventually outclasses it.
