Valheim Workbench & Forge Upgrade Guide — Every Station, Every Extension

Published 2026-09-237 min read

All Valheim crafting stations and their upgrade chains: workbench and forge extensions by tier, cauldron accessories, and what each upgrade unlocks for weapons, armor and tools.

Valheim's gear ceiling is not a level — it is a bench. Every weapon tier and armor quality gates behind station extensions, and knowing the full upgrade chain is the difference between a mid-tier stall and a smooth climb. Here is every station and what each upgrade actually buys.

Workbench — the foundation station

The workbench builds everything from tools to portals, and upgrades craft quality for wood-tier gear. Its extension chain (each piece must sit near the bench):

  • Chopping block — the first upgrade; unlocks better wood tools.
  • Tanning rack — leather-tier gear quality and deer-hide lines.
  • Adze — bronze-era; pushes wood gear to its ceiling.
  • Tool shelf — the final workbench upgrade of the classic line; full tool quality access.

Workbench upgrades also push the bench's build radius, which matters for base walls and repairs — see the base building guide.

Forge — the metal line

The forge carries the metal gear quality ladder, with its own extension set:

  • Forge cooler, anvils, smith's anvil, forge toolrack, forge bellows — the classic five; each adds quality levels until iron and silver gear hit their caps.
  • Artisan table — unlocked by Moder's dragon tears; the gateway to spinning wheels, windmills and Plains-tier industry.
  • Black forge — the Mistlands' dark-metal station, and later the Ashlands' flametal line; each era adds its own extension pieces.
  • Frost Foundry — 1.0's Deep North foundry, forging the Nord arsenal from the biome's new materials and Jotun-dropped armor moulds.

Cauldron — the food and mead line

The cauldron's extension chain gates every serious recipe:

  • Spice rack, butcher's table, pots and pans, mortar and pestle — the classic four, each unlocking recipe tiers.
  • Smoker — 1.0's cauldron extension; smoked dishes join the menu.
  • Galdr table — the Mistlands' magic station, crafting staffs and the Sealbreaker; the mage's forge, essentially.
  • Forge of Potential — the Deep North's hidden idol-powered forge, pushing item upgrades beyond their normal ceiling.

The upgrade rhythm that avoids stalls

  1. When a new biome opens, build the station first, then the gear — ore converts to power only through the chain.
  2. Push extensions one biome ahead of your current gear need; an extra forge level waiting for you beats a mid-raid crafting panic.
  3. Build stations at outposts too — a forge at the copper deposit pays for itself the first trip.
  4. Quality upgrades scale in cost; farm the biome's metal while extensions build.
