Valheim Combat & Stamina Guide — Parry, Roll and Never Swing on Empty

Valheim combat fundamentals: the stamina economy, blocking vs parrying, dodge roll invincibility, weapon movesets, and how to read enemy attack patterns from greydwarf to Fader.
Valheim's combat looks like swing-and-hope until it kills you twice. Underneath sits a legible system: a stamina economy, a parry window, an invincible dodge roll and enemies with readable tells. Master four ideas and every biome from Meadows to Deep North becomes a rhythm game.

The stamina economy is the real health bar
Sprinting, blocking, swinging, jumping and drawing bows all drain one stamina pool, and low stamina leaves you unable to block, roll or flee. Stamina management rules:
- Never enter a fight below half bar. Retreat to full — mobs do not chase far in most biomes.
- Rest and dryness regenerate stamina faster; wet, cold and starved characters regen slower and hit weaker, so fight warm, full and under the Rested buff.
- Rhythm over spam: three controlled swings with a recovery beat outperform a panicked seven-hit combo that strands you on empty.
Blocking, parrying and the dodge roll
Blocking with a shield reduces damage by its block rating. Parrying — raising the shield in the last instants before impact — multiplies the block's effectiveness, staggers most humanoids and opens a window of free hits; timing is generous enough to learn on greydwarves in an evening. Heavy attacks and trolls' overheads overpower parries? Tower shields block projectiles and crowds but cannot parry, so choose: buckler for duels, tower for chaos.
The dodge roll (block plus a direction) spends stamina for invincibility frames, not distance — roll through attacks, not away from them. Against oversized hitboxes like Bonemass's swing or Fader's fire waves, rolling is the only reliable answer.
Weapons: pick the tool, not the favorite
Damage types are armor checks: blunt crushes skeletons and Bonemass, slash shreds flesh, pierce (spears, bows) punishes soft targets, and elemental damage (fire, frost, poison, spirit, lightning) exploits specific boss and biome weaknesses. Carry two damage types minimum plus a bow; a mace-and-bow core carries entire playthroughs. Spears throw — a free ranged opener on any unaware mob.
Read the mob, not the wiki summary
Every enemy has a three-beat language: approach, wind-up (telegraph), commit. Learn the wind-ups of a draugr's overhead, a fuling berserker's spin, a Gjall's dive — and you can fight anything under-leveled. Practice on the weakest member of each new biome's roster; everything else in that biome is a remix.
Bowplay: the coward's Excalibur
Bows let you delete dangerous content from outside its aggro range: draw fully (partial draws waste arrows), lead moving targets, and shoot from high ground or across water where melee mobs cannot path. Pair with sneak for opening volleys — a sneak-hit multiplier on the first arrow deletes elite patrols before they know the fight started.
